Justin Adams & Mauro Durante Film by Serious + Rescheduled Tour

Watch our film above about how these two master musicians met and developed their unique sound together through friendship and shared love of international music. From different musical paths; one post-punk, rock, and blues, the other from the trance of Taranta, folk, and traditional, their music builds up a frenzy of passion and elation.

Justin Adams, guitarist, producer and composer, has been a creator of wonders with Robert Plant in the Sensational Space Shifters. His production on landmark albums by Tinariwen and Rachid Taha highlights his feel for North African groove, while his award-winning collaborations with Juldeh Camara linked griot tradition with raw blues spirit. His work with artists such as Jah Wobble and Sinead O’Connor was infused with the spirit of post-punk London, while his solo guitar album Ribbons was cited by Songlines magazine among the top 50 albums of the past decade.

This new collaboration with Mauro Durante stems from a concert led by Ludovico Einaudi, the legendary Notte de Taranta in Puglia, where the two first played together, recognising kindred spirits in the trance rhythms of Taranta which transcend “melancolia” or the blues. Mauro Durante toured the world for many years with Ludovico Einaudi playing violin and frame drums. He is one of the leading players in the pizzica style of Southern Italy and leads Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, who have played great festivals all over the world. Last year they were featured in their own concert at the BBC Proms (where Justin Adams guested with them) and they won Best Group in the Songlines Music Awards.

They have also released new music separately during lockdown:

Mauro Durante's beautiful video of unity, WE’RE ALL IN THE SAME DANCE, was directed by Gabriele Surdo and has garnered over 400k views online and rising. It has also been projected on buildings around the world.

In Southern Italy, music and dance were once used to exorcise the poison of the Taranta spider. Today, in the midst of a global emergency, music comes out of the walls of a house in Puglia. 112 dancers film themselves performing a dance with their smartphones. In their rooms, houses, on rooftops, balconies, on fire escapes... Everywhere. Everybody on the same music. We're all in the same dance.

‘Quarantine and seclusion were getting overwhelming. I was feeling sad and scared, then I grabbed my violin, wrote a piece and got the idea of making a video out of it, involving dancers from different parts of the world who would film themselves from their own quarantine.

After speaking to my wife Silvia, a dancer, and my friend Gabriele Surdo, one of the most talented film directors I know, we started almost feverishly, daydreaming and traveling in thought. Hundreds of people responded to our appeal - friends, colleagues and people completely unknown to us. People who shared their time, their distant bodies, moving in unison.

We are excited, moved. We are not alone
