Barbican Box 2017

Serious have been partnering with the Barbican’s Creative Learning team since 2015 to deliver Barbican Box Music, which is aimed at engaging students in East London Secondary Schools. The Barbican Box is, literally, a portable box that contains different sounds and objects to encourage an imaginative approach to music making.

In 2016/17, we worked with versatile bassist and champion beat-boxer Bellatrix, who curated the box around the theme of ‘having a voice’. Bellatrix mentored the students and worked with their teachers over the last six months to support them to devise their own music in response to the theme, using the box as a resource.

The project culminated with a performance in the Main Hall at Barbican on Tuesday 28 February 2017. Almost 500 people attended to see 120 students from seven different East London schools perform their incredible original compositions. The showcase also featured an original animation for each piece, created by students from the London College of Communication.

Below you can see a film telling you more about the project.
