22a have established themselves as one of the most respected and important independent labels in the UK underground music scene. The South London based label was founded by DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious back in 2013 with the idea to take back control of his artistry. Fast forward to 2020 and the label is approaching its 38th release, with a back catalogue of music spanning house, hip hop, jazz, garage, soul and Indian classical.

Tenderlonious heads up 22a, a label so on-point we could pretty much fill this column entirely with artists from its roster. This label is forging out a fresh universe for others to explore’

The label has put out seminal releases from some of the leading bands involved in the recent “jazz revival”: Ruby Rushton, the Polish jazz septet EABS, Nick Walters & The Paradox Ensemble, The 22archestra and Pakistani band Jaubi, and also featured artists like Mo Kolours, Henry Wu (Kamaal Williams), Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Dennis Ayler, Neue Grafik and James Creole Thomas.

For this very special EFG London Jazz Festival performance, the label’s maestro Tenderlonious will be leading a showcase of material from across the imprint’s artists and releases over the last few years, with music from and collaborations between Ruby Rushton, Nick Walters, his Tubby Hayes tribute The Piccolo, and more surprises, along with a DJ set from Dennis Ayler.

The label at the centre of South London’s musical evolution. Encompassing a kaleidoscopic patchwork of hip-hop, house, jazz, and groove investigations bound by one thread: a timeless belief in rhythm as a universal language.
