As temperatures soar across the UK, we turn our attention to the effortlessly cool compositions of California’s Ned Doheny – the desert trekking, guitar-playing, surfing, singer-songwriter whose sultry anthems exude the eternal summer of the 70’s like none other.

A key member of the California soft rock scene, Doheny cut his teeth playing at the Troubador on Sunset Strip alongside Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, and The Eagles who all went on to become label-mates on David Geffen’s Asylum Records.

Doheny achieved 70's chart success in the USA, UK and Japan; with strikingly imaginative lyrics and an unrivalled grasp of rhythm, many artists such as Average White Band, Chaka Khan and George Benson have all made hits from Doheny compositions.

Super fans like DJ Harvey have championed the revival of his sound as simply 'Balearic' while younger more recent converts praise Doheny as the defining yacht rock icon.
