Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians" (New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association and a spirit of infinite possibility. The California-born New York-based musician boasts a prolific resume on his own accord in addition to collaborating with Gary Burton and John Zorn, as well as duo projects with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, among others.

Julian Lage's View With A Room (2022) is a collection of 10 compelling original compositions. On this second release for Blue Note Records, Lage casts his gaze outward to discover new orchestrational possibilities with his brilliant and deeply attuned trio of Jorge Roeder, one of the most versatile and expressive bass players in jazz today and founding member of The Bad Plus, drummer Dave King. Julian Lage's latest album, The Layers (2023), is a stunning companion piece to his acclaimed 2022 album. Imbued with vibrant colors and exquisite interplay, "it has all the musical seeds that grew into what I consider the touchstones of View With A Room,” says Lage, “a duo with Bill, a duo with Jorge, more atmospheric and expansive writing, Dave and Jorge’s incredible rhythmic and orchestrational sensibilities."

See Julian Lage's Trio of bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King as they perform the new album on their UK Tour 2023.

Opening the evening and matinee shows at Union Chapel, don't miss London-based cellist and vocalist, Midori Jaeger. Her emotive songs refuse to fit into a box, while her lyrics Her lyrics confront belonging, gender, sexuality and mixed heritage through a distinct and cello-fuelled sonority that aches with meaning and pulses with groove. Recognised by Moses Sumney and Madison Cunningham for her one-of-a-kind cello and vocal style, Midori’s talent is quickly becoming known worldwide.
