Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year

Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year

It's been an extraordinary year for all of us. As we head towards the holidays, we wanted to share with you some of the streams that we have made, while we look forward to seeing you in 2021.

Church of Sound: Gary Crosby's Groundation

Gary Crosby’s all-star band features guests including Moses Boyd, Nathaniel Facey and Shirley Tetteh in a powerful performance at a special venue

Emma Jean Thackray

We made a series of films at Total Refreshment Centre for the EFG London Jazz Festival - it's been great to see Emma-Jean breaking through this year.

Erased Tapes

The Between The Lines festival featured three young artists signed to the Erased Tapes label - Nils Frahm cellist Anne Müller, saxophonist Daniel Thorne, and the enchanting Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit.

Take Five Presents

The EFG London Jazz Festival celebrated our talent development programme Take Five. Serious commissioned ten Take Five composers to create their own videos of their new material. The full playlist is here.

Judi Jackson

The Jazz FM Vocalist of the Year performed some of her favourite jazz and soul numbers. This show featured in the EFG Elements Series and our friends at Jazz FM will be broadcasting it on Christmas Day. You can watch the full show here.

Sarathy Korwar

Another film from the Total Refreshment Centre series shows composer and percussionist Sarathy Korwar leading his new band.

Orphy Robinson’s Virtual Jazz Club Band

This EFG London Jazz Festival commission saw an online ensemble led by Orphy Robinson, taking us from a “lonely hearts” to a “virtual jazz” club band - people joined in from their homes to perform and record with us.

Trio Heinz Herbert

New Switzerland does what it says on the tin and shows off three Swiss artists who are breaking internationally. The whole film is on our website, but for you we've chosen the closing set by Trio Heinz Herbert.

Istanbul Psychedelic

A spectacular film from stages along the Bosphorus. Three generations of Turkish psychedelia are playing - the legendary Moğollar, Glitterbeat stars BaBa ZuLa, Montreux Jazz Award winner Islandman and global jazz sensation Ilhan Ersahin's Istanbul Sessions

Justin Adams & Mauro Durante

From different musical paths; one post-punk, rock, and blues, the other from the trance of Taranta, folk, and traditional, their music builds up a frenzy of passion and elation. They'll be touring for us in 2021 when their new album comes out.

Songs from Life

Serious worked with Nubian Life and Juliet Kelly to create a film for African Caribbean elders that's been distributed to care homes nationally and used by carers. You can watch the full show here.

Ben LaMar Gay

We've worked a lot with cult label International Anthem. Ben created an audiovisual show of sound, movement, rivers, shadows, and memories of Lagos.

You can see many more films and streams here and here, and do take time to explore the Serious digital gallery here.

2021 starts with a Christy Moore livestream from National Concert Hall Dublin - part of a major programme of Irish music - and the next Take Five artist development programme. Shows have already been announced for Chilly Gonzales, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Suzanne Vega and Frazey Ford (yes, they make great Christmas presents) and concerts by Max Richter, Mariza, Brad Mehldau and Joachim Cooder will follow early next year.

The EFG London Jazz Festival runs Friday 12 to Sunday 21 November 2021, and we look forward to announcing live shows while building on the massive national and international reach that streaming and broadcast brought us this year.

Special thanks to all the Serious team and the friends and freelancers, the writers, composers and musicians, the organisers, venues and festivals and all the partners who have helped us survive and grow this year.
