Ranjana Ghatak

Born and raised in London, I was introduced to North Indian Classical Singing at the age of four, and continued to study this tradition along with learning music in school which included western classical singing, musical theatre and dance. After hearing Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty perform in the Southbank Centre in London, my passion to explore singing on a deeper level took me to studying with Ajoyji in Kolkata, India after university.

I spent a few years working in the education department for the London Symphony Orchestra and studying for a Masters in Arts Management at the same time. Whilst continuing to perform and teach singing I pursued my work in arts administration. However after a series of synchronous events, I was led to prioritize my work as a singer and singing workshop leader from 2009.

This lead me to performing and leading education concerts at the Barbican, running workshops in schools and developing a body of work with 2 bands. I released and toured an EP with a jazz quartet in 2011-2013, venues included Greenbelt festival, The Vortex, Dean Clough and Norwich Arts. I also performed with Human Beamings, the project featured improvisatory soundscapes of Indian Classical pieces - performances included opening for Trilok Gurtu in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Jazz Cafe & Spitalfields Festival.

From 2014, I have been creating new solo work with Liran Donin (Mercury Nominated Led Bib bassist & producer), leading to the recording of my first solo album in the next few months. Our performance work to date includes Kew Gardens, Saffron Walden, a commission with Bath International Music Festival, Barbican FreeStage (in the EFG London Jazz Festival), The Streets Festival and two learning & participation concerts in November 2017 at the Wigmore Hall.

My composing work includes a commission by the Royal Opera House & the Southbank Centre to write a choral piece inspired by Pandit Ravi Shankar's Opera, Sukanya - which was performed before the opera at the Southbank Centre by BBC Singers, ROH Community Chorus & Krishna Avanti School in May 2017. I created a soundscape for community theatre with Vaiyu Naidu (Birmingham Rep) and composed a contemporary choral piece based on Raga music for the Commonwealth Games.

The last year has included a UK tour with the Odissi Ensemble & a weekend of performances with dancer Charlotte Moraga for San Francisco Dance Trolleys.
