Commissioning new work

Serious is dedicated to providing opportunities to talented artists and your support will help us to take a leading role in regularly commissioning new music and facilitating artistic collaborations. This area of work contributes to the development of the art form, through the encouragement of creativity and innovation in music.

Commission opportunities are not limited to established artists and formal concert settings, but across the scene and in particular, in learning and participation where innovative work is in constant demand to enage and inspire the next generation.

In 2015 Serious commissioned British guitarist and educator Chris Sharkey to create a new mass participation piece for people of all ages to perform and improvise together – Make It / Break It was born. Make It / Break It was piloted that year, then travelled to the Gateshead International Jazz Festival and to the Southbank Centre as part of EFG London Jazz Festival the year after. Over 100 participants have taken part in the project so far, in which participants rehearse together over a day-long workshop and experiment with a variety of methods of music making.
