Samuel Eagles - Spirit
Chocolate Factory 2 Coburg Road, Wood Green,
Samuel Eagles - Spirit will be presenting never heard before music from their soon to be released album, Life by The SPIRIT. Contemporary, original music with strong melodies and fearsome improvisation.
When renowned saxophonist Mornington Lockett saw potential in encouraging the early glimmers of talent in London-based Samuel Eagles, it indeed kindled something very special. A formative grounding in classical piano (from international pianist, répétiteur and teacher Gillian Ford), along with a fascination for the recordings of Kenny Garrett, were pivotal in bringing Eagles to the alto saxophone; and the academic opportunities of big bands and other ensembles led initially to a position in an amateur ten-piece funk/fusion band. All the while, the young hopeful was being mentored by Mornington Lockett, who would regularly invite him to sit in on his own gigs. Notably, Samuel gained a place in the Royal Academy of Music’s Junior Jazz band, directed by respected educator Nick Smart – and whilst there, he was further inspired by classes from artists such as John Paricelli and Perfect Houseplants, enhanced by the first thrill of performing at the famed London venues of Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Jazz Club. Eagles’ album, Next Beginning, was hailed a promising and engaging debut by Jazzwise and The Guardian (“His deftly swerving post - bop inventiveness illuminates” – John Fordham); His second release gained much attention globally ("The Future of Jazz" The Jazz Journal). The band includes some of the UK’s present day torch bearers, Sam Leak (piano), Ant Law (guitar), Matthew Read (double bass) and Dave Hamblett (drums). All band leaders in their own right, they make the music come alive and bring a unique character which makes every gig different from the last. ‘Karamel is such a special place, we are so privileged to have this venue in London. Everything about the place is awesome, excellent menu, large open space to dine, space on the sofas to relax, staff who are super kind. Overall great atmosphere and one of my favourite places in London. I can’t wait for this gig!' Samuel Eagles
