Regular Crisis: A Cantata on the Global Economy
LONDON Barbican Cinema 1
Barbican, Level -2, Silk Street
A thought-provoking and powerful film by video and performance artist Marina Landia, soundtracked by Kristjan Järvi, which explores the concept of crisis as a normal state of affairs. In 2008, the world as we knew it was turned upside down by a series of economic events that went on to have a huge impact around the world. The impact of this is still being felt today, and Landia’s work investigates and explores various phenomena and changes in the Western economic system and their social consequences.
With a soundscape curated by conductor Kristjan Järvi featuring works by Dutch pianist and composer Louis Andriessen, The National’s Bryce Dessner and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, as well as Järvi himself, this promises to be a challenging, inspirational evening.
Featuring intimate interviews with prominent global executives and policy-makers, this screening and the following discussion chaired by Diane Coyle will explore the state of mind of people in leadership in today’s uncertain political and economic times. Including interviews with some of the most influential players in the global economy, such as Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes, and Secretary General of OECD Angel Gurria amongst others, the film is a potent artistic reflection on the mindsets and philosophies which prop up the global economy.
At a time when established concepts are being constantly challenged, this exploration provides an unorthodox perspective on the state of today’s economy and the direction that it may take tomorrow.
