Nat Steele Quintet featuring Michael Weiss
LONDON Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club
140 Newington Butts, Kennington, London
For this special one-off, UK vibraphonist Nat Steele takes inspiration from guitar/vibes records like "Bags Meets Wes" (Milt Jackson) and "The Kicker" (Bobby Hutcherson). It will feature tunes by Wes Montgomery, Cedar Walton, Charlie Parker, and those by guest NYC pianist Michael Weiss.
Fresh from the success of the launch of his first album, “Portrait of the MJQ”, in late 2017, and subsequent tour throughout 2018-19 with that band, vibraphonist Nat Steele has put together a new quintet project, running alongside the MJQ band, featuring the music of some his favourite musicians.
For this special one-off concert, the programme takes inspiration from some of the great guitar/vibraphone front line records like "Bags Meets Wes", "The Big Three" (Milt Jackson) and "The Kicker" (Bobby Hutcherson). It will also feature tunes by Wes Montgomery, Cedar Walton, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell, classic standards, along with special arrangements by guest NYC pianist Michael Weiss.
Joining Nat in his new quintet are special guest pianist from NYC Michael Weiss, and Colin Oxley on guitar. Michael Weiss is a world renowned American pianist who has worked with absolutely everyone on the New York scene since he moved there in 1982 including a 15 year association with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, and much work alongside musicians such as George Coleman, Art Farmer, Slide Hampton, Tom Harrell, Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, and Gerry Mulligan.
