Maria Răducanu Quintet
LONDON St John’s Leytonstone
St John's Church, High Rd, Leytonstone
Maria mixes Romanian melodies with fado, rembetika, blues and improvisation.
“Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in the world, Maria mixes Romanian dirges with Fado, Rembetika, blues and improvisation, in creating a music that is pure, deeply emotional and goes straight to the heart.” (John Zorn)
A rebel soul, Maria Răducanu grew up listening to Billie Holiday, Betty Carter and Nat King Cole, wishing that someday she would sing Coltrane’s compositions with Keith Jarrett’s imagination and expressiveness. She brings a free spirit to the best songs from around the world - especially those suited to the female voice. Her interpretation of heart-stoppingly beautiful Romanian songs such as the classic Foaie Verde confirm her as a modern-day Maria Tănase, and she adds fado and Balkan folklore, lullabies and Russian romances, Sephardic standards, tangos and bossa, flowing together into an all-encompassing, utterly-captivating sound-world. Released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, Maria and her international quintet are in London as part of Europalia Arts Festival Romania, a welcome return after her concert at Kings Place in 2011.
