Kronos Quartet & Trio da Kali
Grammy award-winning Kronos Quartet have invited Trio Da Kali to join their concert at the Barbican on Friday 18 May 2018. In a UK live premiere, the pairing will perform material from their recently released collaborative album Ladilikan (World Circuit), a record blending the sounds of West Africa and string quartet.
Brought together by the Aga Khan Music Initiative, Trio Da Kali unites three outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots, featuring musical director and balafon player Fodé LassanaDiabaté, bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyanté and singer Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabate. Kronos and Trio Da Kali's debut album Ladilikan has just been announced as fRoots and Transglobal's Album of the Year 2017. It also appears in the top albums of 2017 for Songlines magazine and Uncut magazine and continues to receive universal praise – described as 'delightful and vital' by The Economist, 'elegant, exquisite' by The Guardian, and 'the most successful encounter between Western classical and traditional African music yet' by Afropop. Having previously performed together only a few times, Kronos and Trio Da Kali come together for a rare live performance at the Barbican
Ladilikan will follow Kronos and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green’s UK premiere of A Thousand Thoughts, co-commissioned by the Barbican, featuring live music, storytelling, and filmed interviews with such prominent artists as Philip Glass, Tanya Tagaq, Steve Reich, Wu Man, and Terry Riley.
