McCaslin has been a talked-about presence in New York jazz circles since the early 1990s, when he was playing with Gil Evans and in the fusion group Steps Ahead, and beginning his long association with Maria Schneider.

With 11 albums and three Grammy nominations under his belt, he became a household name in 2016 when he collaborated with David Bowie on what was to be his final album, Blackstar, with this, McCaslin's most recent band.

Featuring keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Mark Guiliana, this had already become one of the signature bands of the day, playing a free-wheeling, grooving form of electric jazz, before being heard by Bowie in a tiny New York bar and thence providing the instrumental muscle behind his final recording, with the singer plugging into the band’s ‘intensely responsive metabolism.’ (NY Times).
