David Murray with Paul Zauner's Blue Brass

LONDON Vortex Jazz Club
11 Gillett Square
N16 8AZ

A great chance to hear David Murray, one of the most important saxophonists and band leaders, in an intimate space. Here he re-creates a project from the late 80s, touring with Austrian trombonist Paul Zauner. The rest of the band is bassist Wolfram Derschmidt and drummer Dusan Novakov

When this band played at the Vortex in 2017, Mike Hobart in the Financial Times wrote: 'What we got was a majestic performance by a jazz iconoclast on peak form, stretching out over familiar material with sensitive support. David Murray has long been a concert hall headliner with a stage persona to match, but here he was at ease, visibly focused and relishing the chance to perform at a conversational volume. Murray can condense the history of jazz saxophone into a single phrase, and, like Sonny Rollins, has an architectural sense of form.'

David Murray is one of the most iconic saxophonists around today. His range of musical influences and performances are legendary, ranging from World Saxophone Quartet and Butch Morris in the 70s, through to the recent trio with the late Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lynne Carrington. Paul Zauner is one of the most energetic musicians in jazz. Not only as a trombonist playing jazz and baroque music, but also as the founder of the PAO label and the organiser of the Inntoene Jazz Festival in Austria every year - on his family farm - where the range of musicians is from Abdullah Ibrahim through to Sons of Kemet.
