International critical acclaim for his CDs and tours plus multiple awards and the audience prize at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival piano competition have firmly established Austrian-born pianist, David Helbock as one of the most exciting talents
His new project ‘Playing John Williams’ is his 4th solo piano album, following the releases of ‘Emotions’ (2003), ‘Time’ (2007) and ‘Purple’ (2012).
Since, Helbock has been an exclusive artist with the well-known German jazz label ACT-Music, with whom he has already released two albums –‘Into the Mystic’ (2016) and ‘Tour d´Horizon’ (2018), and now a third album – his first solo piano album on ACT. On this album, Helbock tackles the music of John Williams, one of the most famous film music composers of all time, who wrote nearly all the music to Steven Spielberg´s blockbusters. He connects this programme seamlessly to two of his projects in the past. On ‘Purple’ the pianist dealt with the music of Prince, and on ‘Into The Mystic’, he dealt with stories drawn from different mythologies, in his trio with bass ukulele an drums. As part of this album, he included an arrangement of themes from Star Wars – full of cross-connections of different mythological elements. With ‘Playing John Williams, the film music from blockbusters like ‘Indiana Jones’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Jaws’ or ‘Schindler´s List’ are reduced to their essence, coming alive in unique, creative and jazzy solo piano arrangements.
