Serious and South African artists

Serious worked with the SA-UK Seasons 2014-2015 team in Durban to create a two-year programme of South African jazz music at the EFG London Jazz Festival to mark 20 years of democracy in South Africa, the cultural impact of this period to jazz music and the artists illuminating the scene.

Serious has a long history with and passion for South African music starting with Claire Whitaker and Africa 95, which developed into producing an opera in in Pretoria with Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo and writer Mandla Langa.
This passion for South African jazz music went on to become embedded in our work and has led to many special events including Celebrate South Africa, producing the UK concert for Nelson Mandela's 80th birthday in partnership with the South African High Commission and most recently Sibongile Khumalo and friends performing at Cadogan Hall in 2015 in partnership with SA-UK Seasons 2014-2015.

This twenty year history of working with South African artists has led to long standing relationships with established stars such as Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and is now introducing us to the next generation of rising stars such as, Thandiswa Mazwai and Bokani Dyer.
